ADS-B Upgrade for TR-220

Tel-Instrument Electronics Corporation has announced an upgrade for the TR-220 Multifunction Test Set. This upgrade will provide the operator with the ability to test the ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) 1090 MHz squitter, DF-17 and/or DF-18.

ADS-B TX Function

The TR-220 ADS-B Transmitter Function allows the operator to : Receive, Decode, and Display various types of ADS-B Squitters.

      * Extended Squitter Airborne Position
      * Extended Squitter Surface Position
      * Extended Squitter MODE S address
      * Extended Squitter Identification and Type
      * Extended Squitter Airborne Velocity

When testing the Position Squitter, the TR-220 will display the data contained in the MU Message Field. The data from the airborne squitter will include: altitude, altitude source (barometric or GNSS derived), squitter period, and decoded LAT/LONG position. The data from the surface squitter will include: aircraft movement, magnetic heading, squitter period, and the decoded LAT/LONG Position.

The TR-220 will also decode and display the MODE S address, Tail Number with country code, and interrogator identifier information.

The TR-220 will display Airborne velocity squitter information including: velocity type, East/West velocity, North/South velocity, geometric height difference from barometric altitude, and barometric/geometric vertical rate (Up/Down).

Aircraft Identification and Type including aircraft category, squitter period, and flight ID are also displayed.

ADS-B RX Function

The TR-220 ADS-B Receiver (RX) function will allow the operator to simulate a 1090 MHz squitter for testing of an ADS-B receiver. The Test Set will be capable of transmitting an airborne or surface position squitter containing a variety of data.

The TR-220 can then be utilized to transmit a DF-17 or DF-18 airborne squitter that will simulate a transponder intruder that is located 10 nmi. from the Test Set at a 0 degree bearing. The SETUP function allows the operator to set the LAT/LONG position. The intruder transponder will squitter: altitude, velocity (250 kts.) 180 degree magnetic heading, aircraft category (A3), flight ID, and MODE S Address.

The TR-220 can be used to transmit a DF-17 or DF-18 surface position squitter. The information contained in the squitter includes: position, altitude, velocity, magnetic heading (301 degrees) aircraft category (A3), flight ID, and a MODE S address.
